Summer Together Camp: Mid-Summer Adventures

Summer Together Camp: Mid-Summer Adventures

Summer Together Camp is in full swing, and we’re thrilled to share some of the exciting adventures and unforgettable memories we have already created! Our youth and teen campers are embarking on a journey of exploration, learning, and personal growth within and beyond the classroom.

Check out some of the fun places we’ve explored so far!

Connecting with the Natural World at the California Academy of Sciences

One of the most memorable off-site adventures was our trip to the California Academy of Sciences! During this STEM-themed field trip, BTWCSC youth immersed themselves in exhibits that showcased the breathtaking wonders of the natural world. As we ventured through the Academy, our youth witnessed the mesmerizing diversity of marine life in the expansive aquarium, encountering vibrant tropical fish, sting rays, and jellyfish. In the tropical rainforest exhibit, they observed towering trees and a symphony of sounds. They even had the chance to watch fascinating creatures like colorful butterflies fluttering from flower to flower! They also delved into astronomy and Earth sciences that unveiled the mysteries of our planet and universe. Our visit to the California Academy of Sciences helped foster their curiosity and provided them with opportunities to appreciate the extraordinary marvels that exist within our natural world.

Cultivating Generations of Learning Through Reading

Our intergenerational Reading With Friends program creates a lasting connection through storytelling between our Senior Victory Club members and our enthusiastic K-1 Summer Camp students. At our Center, we firmly believe that intergenerational activities play a vital role in fostering appreciation and respect for our elders and community. As our seniors and youth come together to share tales of adventure, imagination, and life experiences, they build a special bond that transcends age barriers.

Flying High at the House of Air

Our K-8th graders enjoyed a high-flying field trip to the House of Air, an indoor trampoline park. They experienced the thrill of soaring through the air, bouncing on trampolines, and playing dodgeball and basketball. With trained staff ensuring safety, it was an unforgettable time!

Exploring Career Pathways at the College of San Mateo

Our summer camp journey was filled with discovery as our middle school youth began an exploration of various careers and colleges. We recently had the privilege of visiting the College of San Mateo, where we immersed ourselves in an inspiring tour, discovering the vibrant campus and educational resources.

Immersing Ourselves in Science at the Exploratorium

Our youth embarked on an exciting and educational field trip to the Exploratorium in San Francisco. The trip was organized as part of our Youth Program’s efforts to provide summer campers with hands-on learning experiences and exposure to the wonders of science and exploration. From the moment they entered, they were greeted by mesmerizing exhibits on physics, biology, chemistry, and more. One of the favorite attractions was the Tactile Dome, where the students navigated a pitch-dark, tactile maze using their sense of touch and teamwork!

Mo’Magic Field Day Event at Hamilton Park

We had a wonderful time enjoying the fresh air and playing games at Hamilton Park while attending Mo’Magic’s Field Day event. The day couldn’t have been more perfect with a spirited game of tug-of-war, followed by a climb to the top of the playground!

Cooking Up Confidence

Mr. Ron Cain, a local chef and senior resident in our John Burton Housing, and our superstar volunteer Jake host an intergenerational cooking class at the Center! Youth and seniors learn knife skills, and gain an appreciation for the importance of balanced eating habits and the impact it can have on their overall well-being. This early exposure to cooking in the community sets the foundation for a lifetime of making informed food choices and ignites a passion for healthy living, ensuring our youth thrive in all aspects of their lives.

Roaring Adventures and Wildlife Wonders at the Oakland Zoo

We had a blast exploring the exhibits and learning about wildlife conservation at the Oakland Zoo! It was an unforgettable day filled with laughter and exciting animal encounters.

Che Fico Dinner Experience

Our Teens/TAY were invited as special guests at Che Fico, a nationally-recognized Italian restaurant right here in our neighborhood! We were treated to a three-course meal of cucumbers with preserved lemon, focaccia with whipped mascarpone, housemade pastas and pizza, fried risotto, and dessert and espresso to cap it all off! The chef walked us through the ingredients in our dishes and shared more about what it’s like to make a career in the hospitality industry. Thank you, Che Fico!

As we reach the midpoint of our Summer Together Camp journey, we are filled with gratitude for the incredible experiences and growth so far. The connections made, the knowledge gained, and the friendships forged will undoubtedly leave a lasting impact.

Stay tuned for more updates as we embark on the second half of the season!
