Juneteenth Reflections: Celebrating Black Freedom & Heritage

Juneteenth Reflections: Celebrating Black Freedom & Heritage

We celebrated Juneteenth with our Fillmore/Western Addition neighbors, community partners, and dear friends across the city to honor and uplift our rich cultural heritage. This year’s festivities helped us reflect on our shared commitment to empowerment, unity, and cultural pride. From parades to events, every moment was a testament to the strength and resilience of our Black community.

San Francisco’s 2nd Annual Juneteenth Parade

The 2nd Annual Juneteenth Parade was a vibrant celebration of community spirit and cultural heritage! We joined with the San Francisco Department of Public Health (SFDPH) to decorate and celebrate on a classic SF trolley! SFDPH brought swag for us to hand out to the crowd and we danced down the street with our community!

Juneteenth on the Waterfront Event

Great seeing everyone at the 4th Annual Juneteenth on the Waterfront! We celebrated local Black-owned businesses with a day of delicious food, crafts, and community at the Ferry Plaza Farmers Market. We supported Black craft makers at the In The Black pop-up market and joined the community at the Foodwise Classroom for free cooking demos. We even made our own Juneteenth crafts at the Foodwise Education Station!

Juneteenth Freedom Festival Celebration

The historic Fillmore District came alive for the 79th Annual Juneteenth Freedom Festival! This vibrant celebration, which spanned six city blocks and attracted over 15,000 attendees, featured live performances by legendary R&B soul group, The Whispers, and the talented Yolanda Adams. In collaboration with the San Francisco Public Library, we distributed over 1,000 free books to the community, hosted storytelling with authors like Natasha Tripplett of Juneteenth Is, provided massages by Black practitioners, had a craft station and SFPL’s button making, and connected with the community! Thank you to the San Francisco Public Library for collaborating and Brooklyn’s BEM Books and SF’s Black Bird Books for the additional titles!

Reflecting on this past month, we are filled with pride and gratitude for our vibrant community and Black joy! The Juneteenth festivities this year were a powerful reminder of our collective strength, unity, and dedication to preserving our cultural heritage. Every event showcased the best of San Francisco’s rich spirit, and we are honored to have shared these moments with you all.
